Our experience using these in the Auckland region:

Keep the crowsn in a cool, dry place until planting. Planting depth 15-20cm deep. Plant spacing 20-30cm, with rows 1.5m apart. Place crowns with buds facing up in the bottom of the trench and cover with 2.5-3.5cm of soil. Gradually fill the trench with soil during the first year. Cut and remove the fern leaves in late Autumn once it has turned brown. Resist picking the spears until after 2 years.
