Our experience using these in the Auckland region:

Hebes have a reputation for being short lived, but our ones of these in our garden in a spot that gets pretty hot and dry in the summer are still going strong 32 years after planting. We just give ours a light trim every year to keep them to around 1.5m tall. Then they flower and look pretty. You can't ask for more than that.
