These definitely do best in well drained soils - we have one planted on a clay slope and it's growth rate and flowering is a bit disappointing, so, dig a big hole, add lots of Kaipara Coast Planting mix, and then you will get up to 1m a year, rather then the 1m every 10 years like our one!
