Our experience using these in the Auckland region:

We have had great success with a hedge of these in Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens, in a really tough site on a steep bank. Our only regret is we didn't keep it pruned - they are now huge, at least 5m tall. They flower beautifully each year. After flowering they can be a bit sparse with leaves, but the new spring growth soon comes.
