Our experience using these in the Auckland region:

Officially these are slow growing, but we still seem to have to cut ours back twice a year. The secret to growing these in Auckland is well drained soil, and lots and lots of fertiliser and mulch. That will keep them nice and green and thick - if they get hungry they tend to go yellow.
