I always thought these were a fragile little plant for sheltered areas, however recently I saw them growing at the top of a wind swept cliff as a low hedge. They do like warmer temperatures - you won't get a lot of growth in the winter. They clip well as a flowering hedge in urban Auckland areas. Just make sure the soil isn't wet and cold in the winter.
