For a fast growing wind resistant green native tree you can't go past native Ngaio. Use as the first line of defence against the wind, then do your more attractive trees behind them. They have had a bad wrap for being poisonous to stock. On our farm we find the animals nibble the odd leaf without any issues, but you definately wouldn't want to feed the prunings to your precious animals.
