Our experience using these in the Auckland region:

Carpet Thymes make a great groundcover, but must have well drained soil. Sticky winter clay soils will kill them. Try using a mix of different Thyme varieties together to make a wonderful artists pallete of diifferent leaves and colours. Allow for 4 to 6 plants per m2.
